FULLERTON, CA — Members of the California Women’s Leadership Association and the local Asian American community today condemned the Sharon Quirk-Silva for Assembly campaign for campaign mail that prominently displays the words “Not One of Us” next to a photo of her opponent, Korean-American Young Kim.

The mail with the offensive messaging began showing up in local mail boxes this week.

“I have endured racism my entire life as an Asian-American, constantly being questioned about where I was born, etc. and I will not tolerate racist comments to be made against an Asian-American simply because she chose to run for public office,” said Councilwoman Ling-Ling Chang, the Republican nominee for Assembly in the neighboring 55th District.

“As the founding executive director of CWLA and as a Fullerton City Councilwoman it has long been my passion to support women to run for office,” said Jennifer Fitzgerald. “In a diverse community like ours, these racial implications are unacceptable. Whether or not that was the intention, it was an irresponsible message to send to Fullerton voters.”

Young Kim is a long time community leader in north Orange County and the Republican nominee in the 65th Assembly district.

Buena Park, CA — Republican Assembly candidate Young Kim (R-65) today announced the endorsements of Buena Park Mayor Steve Berry, Councilmember Fred Smith and former Mayor Patsy Marshall.

“I’m proud to receive the endorsement of Buena Park’s leaders,” said Kim. “I look forward to representing Buena Park in the State Assembly, where I will fight to protect Prop. 13 and to roll back the gas tax increases scheduled to take effect in January.”

Here’s the Deal: This is Kim’s first time running for office – and in a crucial district in California’s 65th District. Kim faces Democrat incumbent Sharon Quirk-Silva, marking the first time voters will be choosing between two women in the district. Kim – endorsed by Rep. Ed Royce and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, among others – was selected as a top recruit in the RSLC’s Future Majority Project.

Fullerton, CA — Republican Assembly candidate Young Kim (R-65) today praised the Fullerton City Council for unanimously passing a resolution this week affirming support for Proposition 13.

“I am very pleased that the Fullerton City Council unanimously approved the resolution affirming support for Proposition 13,” said Kim. “Proposition 13 is one of the most important measures ever adopted by the state’s voters and I pledge to defend it against all attempts to water it down.”

Kim’s opponent, current Assembly member Sharon Quirk-Silva, does not agree that Proposition 13 should be protected. Last year she voted for ACA 8, a measure labeled “the most egregious attack on Prop. 13 ever to come out of the Legislature,” by the President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.

Quirk-Silva’s vote was to abolish the current requirement that “special taxes” be approved by a two-thirds vote, lowering the Prop. 13 threshold to 55%.

“Quirk-Silva’s attack on Proposition 13 demonstrates her disregard for California’s already over-taxed families and small businesses,” said Kim campaign consultant Andre Levesque. “It’s a good thing that the city council in Fullerton disagrees.”

ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Today Young Kim received a critical endorsement from the Orange County Register in her campaign for the State Assembly. You can read the full editorial on the Orange County Register’s website. The Register’s endorsement is influential in local elections as it is the area’s most read and respect news publication. Below are some excerpts of note.

“In a district where Democrats have a registration advantage of only a fraction of a percent, it will likely be the area’s sizable registration of independents – spurred by issues rather than partisanship – that will decide this hotly contested election. Ms. Kim is the better choice when it comes to protecting taxpayers and restoring the beleaguered California economy.

“On education, Ms. Kim said she supports charter schools, vouchers and the conclusions made in the Vergara court decision striking down the state’s two-year tenure and seniority rules,”

“Ms. Kim also prefers lowering economic barriers to businesses across the board – rather than the targeted tax breaks to big businesses that have become popular in Sacramento – to get more people into jobs.”

“In Ms. Kim, we found a candidate who offers sound policy prescriptions on a number of issues and who would be a welcome addition to the statehouse. We are confident she is willing to take the much-needed political risks. She has our endorsement.”

Fullerton, CA – Candidate for the 65th Assembly District urged Governor Jerry Brown and the California legislature to fix California’s Death Penalty system that was ruled unconstitutional by U.S. Judge Cormac J. Carney in a shock announcement today.

“Wednesday’s ruling is illustrative of just how out of touch our Government is with the problems that are facing California,” said Young Kim. “Instead of addressing problems facing California, our lawmakers ignore problems until they are forced to make a decision. It’s time for decisions to implement a process that will carry out voter approved Death penalty sentences. I urge the Governor and legislature to immediately work to find solutions to the problems that cause the delays with our justice system that Judge Carney felt the need to intervene.”

ORANGE COUNTY, CA—Working right up until the June 30th reporting deadline, small businesswoman Young Kim announced today that she has surpassed $800,000 dollars raised in her campaign for the 65th Assembly District. With the final amount still being calculated Young Kim’s announcement makes her one of the most prolific fundraising candidates in the State.

Insiders and politicos monitoring the 65th District will be impressed with Young Kim’s performance in the June 3rd Primary Election, where she led her opponent by almost 10 percentage points. Kim’s fundraising numbers against an incumbent will further prove her credibility as one of the most impressive and dynamic candidates in the State.

“Young is well positioned to win back this seat in November,” said Republican political consultant Andre Levesque. “Her opponent went to Sacramento with an agenda that is out of line with the District and that is reflected in the number of endorsements, votes and donors that Young has received in her campaign. Momentum is with Young Kim to win the 65th District.”

The 65th Assembly district is expected to be a top target for both parties in 2014. It includes all or parts of Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, La Palma, Fullerton and Stanton.

Young Kim is a small business owner and long-time advisor to U.S. Representative Ed Royce, who has represented all of the 65th District.

The district was represented by Republicans until 2012, when Quirk-Silva defeated Assemblyman Chris Norby.

June 5, 2014

Democrats, who seized two-thirds control of the State Assembly in 2012, will have a tough time repeating the task this November. In Tuesday’s low turnout primary election, more than a half dozen members of the State Assembly — all Democrats – fell below 50 percent in their re-election bids.

Known as the incumbent rule, derived from a 1989 article by Nick Panagakis, incumbents who poll under 50 percent are expected to lose late deciding voters. In recent years, data guru and FiveThirtyEight blogger Nate Silver has questioned the rule as it applies to polling. However, the 50 percent threshold still offers a guide to incumbents that must work in November.

It’s risky – perhaps even foolhardy – to read much into the results of an abysmally low turnout primary election.

With that caveat, however, it appears that the California Republican Party, which has been on the brink of utter irrelevance, may be making at least a mild comeback.

Three of its candidates for statewide office present a new, more moderate and more inclusive face to voters, with banker Neel Kashkari’s defeat of Assemblyman Tim Donnelly the most obvious example.
